Precious Katie
Katie is a
beautiful little girl we have come to know through the internet. We met
her mother and grandmother online, and became great online friends.
Since then,
they all have become very dear to our hearts. We would like to tell you a
little about Katie and why A Stitch Club is trying to raise funds for her.
Katie
appears to be your average six year old little girl. She loves High School
Musical, like many other little girls.
There is
something quite different about Katie though. Several weeks ago, she was
admitted into the hospital. After many tests, the doctors found a tumor on
Katie's brain. The doctors and family were hopeful that the tumor was not
malignant. Katie had to undergo brain surgery a couple of weeks ago. The
doctor's informed her parents that the surgery was high risk. Family and
friends prayed constantly, and Katie came through surgery well.
I must tell
you, before Katie was taken down for her surgery, she began making get
well cards for all the other children in the hospital on her floor. Not
only was she facing the most fearful time of her life, she was brave and
kind enough to think of others.
After her
surgery, the doctors informed her family that nearly 50% of the tumor
remained inside Katie's brain and could not be removed. Everyone was still
hopeful that is was not cancer.
About two
weeks ago, the family had to meet with the doctors at the Children's
Hospital. They were told the worst news of their lives. Katie had cancer,
the type that Ted Kennedy has. This was not the news they were hoping for.
Yet, Katie, the brave girl she is, still keeps the smile on her face.
Katie was told that she would begin treatment for her cancer this week.
However, this did not happen as expected.
Katie's
mother received a call from their insurance company. The call was to
inform them that Katie could not begin treatment, as the insurance would
not cover it. Her mother, feeling as all hope was lost, didn't know where
to turn. A relative reminded her of St. Jude's. She gave them a call. Many
prayers were answered, and St. Jude's will be flying Katie out next week
for her treatments. It will be required that Katie remain there at least
for 8 weeks at St. Jude's in Tennessee.
Although St.
Jude's has been an answer to many of their prayers, they still have many
unpaid hospital and doctor bills that need to be paid. I hope that we can
all work together to give this sweet girl and her family a helping hand.
We have been
sending care packages. Our children took their allowance they had been
saving, and sent Katie a wonderful package of goodies.
Katie was
excited to get it, but especially from online friends. Every heart can be
touched by another's kindness.
From now
throughout September, A Stitch Club will donate 15% of all proceeds to
Katie and her family.
